family. 29-year-old krystle campbell and a chinese exchange student whose family asked her name to remain private. they're the focus. as well as the investigation on who killed them. and for that, abc's brian ross joins us. brian, what do they know? >> good evening, terry. right now, this is an investigation with great urgency because whoever did it is still at large and it's not known whether more attacks are planned. today there was a great breakthrough. according to the fbi, they have recovered the partial mangled remains of one of the bombs that did not fully explode. it turns out it's made out of common kitchen items, a pressure cooker. this exact model that we bought for $140 tonight about a half mile from here. but at a bomb it was palled with wires, electronic circuit board, tiny ball bearings and nails. all designed to maim and kill and get maximum damage to its victims. this is what remains of the pressure cooker turned into a moment made bomb. seen in this fbi crime lab photo obtained by abc news. it was hidden in a black backpack. what's left of it seen in this photo. the simp
the name of the second victim that was killed. 29-year-old krystle campbell is among nothose who had their liv tragically cut short. the president led an event honoring the 2012 nascar champion with remarks about the tragedy in boston. >> we mourn the victims. we pray for their loved ones. and rest assured, as i said today, and will continue to say until it gets done, we're going to uncover whoever it is that was responsible for yesterday's cowardly act. we're going to find out why they did it, and they will be brought to justice. >> and as authorities put out the call for photo, video, any information to help lead to the perpetrators, we are learning more about just how the explosives were made. law enforcement officials familiar with the case say they appear to have consisted of an explosive and shrapnel backed inside a pressure cooker, probably triggered by some kind of timer. if that is the case, we have seen this before. one of the three devices used in the 2010 attack in times square incorporated a pressure cooker containing approximately 120 fire crackers. a soldier, nazir abd
. today we learned about krystle campbell who died in the blast. she came yesterday to watch her friend cross the finish line. her mom said she worked 16 hour days at the local seafood restaurant but was never too tired to share her love or her smile. she was just 29 years old. martin richard was just 8 years old, his mother and 6-year-old sister recovering from surgery tonight. the sign he's holding in that photo for the second grade peace march reads, no more hurting people. we'll talk more about martin richard tonight, three lives lost, dozens more forever changed. we honor them and also this strong city. for all that has happened here, you should know this is not a city under siege. this is not a city of fear. yes, people may be holding their kids a little tighter, keeping their eyes open a little wider, but this is a city where today life and love and liberty continue. people went jogging today, they walked their dogs, brought their children to the playground and to school. boston has been battered, but it is by no means broken, not now, not ever. we've learned from 9/11 and perhap

-years old krystle campbell. president obama will travel to boston on thursday. >>> we have the remains of a pressure cooker, a shredded black backpack and some kind of ball bearings or metal pellets. what can we read into this at this stage? >> you are looking at what they have in this investigation, which is the bombs themselves. apparently two very similar if not twin bombs placed in black nylon bags that they are recreating as much as they can. at quantico. the fbi lab. it is how, who did this and why that they really do not have any leads on. you are looking at forensic evidence, it will be very important when they catch this person. but in terms of trying to find that person, i think it will be more difficult as they recreate the bombs. they will have to figure out where some of this material may have come from. perhaps this will spark a tip from somebody who knows about somebody was working with pressure cookers or maybe has just put trust them. but right now, it all seems to be centered around the forensics and putting this all back together, these bonds back together and try to

was such a hard worker in everything she did. this doesn't make any sense. >> krystle campbell was at the race with her best friend who suffered severe injuries. >> then the youngest victims, 8-year-old martin richard was remembered last night in his dorchester neighborhood, with a candlelight vigil. the vigil was at a park where he often played. abc's linsey davis has a look at his life cut short. >> reporter: the big brown smiling eyes of martin richard makes the sorrow of what happened monday afternoon all the more palpable. the 8-year-old was known as a little league star. >> he was the fastest kid, maybe the tallest kid on his team. just a marvel to watch on the field. but he was just -- a delightful young boy. >> reporter: friends say the family went to the boston marathon every year. but one of those twin explosions ended martin's short life sending his mother to the hospital with a serious head injury. his younger sister lost a leg. neighbors in this close knit community are now grieving along with martin's father. >> i was outside with my dog, i saw him get out of the car. he was dres

, it is an act of terror. >> among the dead, 8-year-old martin richard, 29-year-old krystle campbell and the third victim is a boston university grad student from china whose parents asked her name not be made public. let's get to the latest with pete williams. i want to start with the two photos, the before and after of a bag next to a mailbox. how important are investigators thinking these could be? >> to be determined, i think. they are looking at this picture and similar pictures to see if that's how the bombs were placed. they're sort of contradictory photo evidence here about whether that's where they went because the after doesn't seem to show a lot of damage, but it's quite clear that the bombs themselves were not busted up into little tiny pieces and the pictures we're seeing show some large pictures of the cook er themselves. let me show you right here, you can see the brand name. inok. of one of the pressure cookers and on the pictures that show the batteries, this is a chinese made battery and these are also wires that were made in china. now, that kind of lead is very im
are just learning her identity. her name is krystle campbell, a graduate of medford high school, graduated back in 2001. her employer sent out a facebook message. no words can describe how much she meant to all of us. she was an incredible woman, always full of energy and hard at work, but never too tired to share her love and a smile with everyone. krystle campbell lost her life. we're going to talk to a doctor who was on the scene, running in the race, and then turned right around to try to help those in need. i want to bring you up to date with the latest on the investigation. for that, to brooke. brooke? >> in terms of the investigation, u.s. officials are saying that there is no reporting, any connection with foreign connection, reaction from al qaeda thus far. here is what we do know. because different sources are telling cnn these bombs appear to have been placed in metal pressure cookers that were then hidden in backpacks. in terms of the saudi man we heard about, whose apartment has been searched, apparently sources telling cnn that that has no connection to the blast, but joe joh
